What working with us from Melbourne looks like

1

You answer 9 quick questions
Online, in about a minute: roughly what you owe, who to, and what comes in each week. Start here.
2

We call you
A member of our Bankstown team goes through your answers and asks about your budget and credit history.
3

You decide
If a consolidation loan makes sense, we look at lending options through our panel. If it doesn’t, we say so and explain the alternatives.
Same time zone

Melbourne and Sydney keep the same time all year, including daylight saving, so our hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, are the same in Melbourne.

What it costs: Debt Negotiators is a fee-based service. Fees are explained before you decide, and the first conversation costs nothing. If you take out a loan we arrange, we may receive a commission from the lender. We’ll tell you about it before you decide. The rates are in our Credit Guide.

Before you consolidate

Four questions worth answering first

A consolidation loan pays out several debts so you have one repayment. It moves your debt to a new lender rather than reducing it, so these questions decide whether it helps.

Will it cost less in total?
Compare the total interest and fees on the new loan with what you’d pay on your current debts, not just the monthly repayment.

Can you keep up one repayment?
The new repayment needs to fit your budget every month, with room for the unexpected.

Will the cards be closed?
If paid-out cards are used again, you can end up with the new loan and fresh card debt as well.

Is your home involved?
Rolling debts into a home loan puts your home at risk and can cost far more over a long term. More on refinancing.
Our debt consolidation page covers secured and unsecured loans in more detail.
When consolidation usually isn’t the answer
The repayment still wouldn’t fit your budget
The only loan available costs more overall
Several recent applications have been declined
Other options we work through
Informal arrangements with each creditor
Debt agreements under Part IX of the Bankruptcy Act
Formal options are listed on your credit file and the National Personal Insolvency Index. Our Melbourne debt help page covers every option we work with.

Debt consolidation in Melbourne: common questions

Do I need to come into an office?

No, and we don’t have a Melbourne office. Our team is in Bankstown, NSW, and we work with Melbourne clients by phone from start to finish. If you’d prefer to meet face to face, you can make an appointment at our Bankstown office.

What time zone do you call in?

Melbourne and Sydney share the same time zone, including daylight saving, so we call Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm your time.

Can I consolidate debts with lenders based in other states?

Usually, yes. Many lenders operate nationally, and what matters is whether the new lender will pay out each debt, not where it was taken out. Whether a particular debt can be included depends on the lender.

Can I consolidate if I rent?

Possibly. An unsecured consolidation loan doesn’t need a home as security, but rates are usually higher and lending criteria apply. Some applications are declined.

Will a consolidation loan lower my repayments?

It depends on the rate, fees and term. A longer term may make each repayment smaller but cost more overall, so we compare the total cost with what you pay now.

What happens to my credit file if I apply?

Each application records a credit enquiry, and a new loan is listed on your credit file with its repayment history. Several declined applications in a short time can make the next one harder, so we check whether a loan looks realistic before anything is applied for.

What if I've already been declined for a loan?

Tell us on the call. A recent decline doesn’t rule out every option, but it may mean a consolidation loan isn’t realistic right now. We’ll go through what else may be open to you, including the downsides of each.

Is there a page about all debt options in Melbourne?

Yes. Our Melbourne debt help page covers consolidation, informal arrangements, debt agreements and personal insolvency agreements, each with its downsides.
