Content on this site is written by the Debt Negotiators team and reviewed against primary sources — the ATO, ASIC, AFSA, the OAIC and Moneysmart — before it is published. Where a rule or a threshold is quoted, we link to the body that sets it, so you can check the current figure yourself rather than trusting a number in an article.

Who we are

Debt Negotiators has been helping Australians with unmanageable debt since 2009. We are a team of 25, based in Bankstown, NSW, working with clients right across the country. In that time we’ve helped over 15,000 Australians work towards managing their debt.

Most of the people who contact us have already tried the obvious things — a consolidation loan, a balance transfer, a hardship arrangement — and found the numbers still don’t work. What we do is look at the whole position and work out which options are genuinely open, including the ones that don’t require a lender to say yes.

What we’re licensed to do

Debt Negotiators is an AFSA-registered Debt Agreement Administrator (registration 1403), holds Australian Credit Licence 390820, and is a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (membership 25029). The licensed entity is A & M Group Pty Ltd, ABN 90 138 457 520.

Those registrations matter because they set the rules we operate under, and because AFCA membership means there is an independent body you can escalate a complaint to if you are not satisfied with how we handle something.

What we don’t do

We think it’s worth being as clear about the limits as the capabilities.

  • We are not a registered liquidator, and we do not act as a voluntary administrator or a small business restructuring practitioner. Only a person registered with ASIC as a registered liquidator can take those appointments.
  • We do not provide financial product advice or legal advice. Where a question is a legal one, we say so and suggest you take it to a lawyer.
  • We do not promise outcomes. Creditor acceptance of a proposal is a creditor decision, and no one can guarantee it in advance.

Free help is available first

If you would like free, independent help before speaking with anyone who charges, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers free financial counselling, and Moneysmart’s managing debt guidance is a good place to start reading.

We mention it first because it’s true and because anyone who won’t tell you about the free option is worth being careful with.
